Reviewing The Boncharge Red Light Face Mask
I have always wanted to try out a red light face mask, so when the lovely people at Bon Charge asked me to review one, I jumped at the chance.
These personal face masks use the power of red light and near infrared light to help improve the appearance of the skin.
Plus I was interested in red light therapy in general for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, based on this study. However, today we will simply focus on cosmetic use!
What is a red light face mask and what does it do?
A red light face mask is a skincare device that uses red LED (light-emitting diode) and near infrared light technology to provide various benefits to the skin. The red light emitted by the mask stimulates collagen production, improve blood circulation, and promote skin rejuvenation. It is often used for anti-aging purposes, reducing the look of wrinkles and fine lines, and improving overall skin texture (do you really need me to say more?!).
How do you use a red light face mask?
It’s actually pretty easy and fun to use!
You just place place the mask on your face, strap it on around your head, choose from red light, infrared light or both, decide your length of time and turn it on.
Leave it on for 10-20 minutes or more if needed. The mask is rechargeable and portable, with no cords, so you can walk around with it on or you can sit down and relax.
Unlike skincare, the mask is suitable for all skin types. Boncharge advise you can use it as little as 10 minutes, three times a week to start seeing results.
What are the benefits of red light face masks?
Collagen production: Red light therapy has been shown to stimulate the production of collagen, a protein that helps maintain the skin's elasticity and firmness. This can lead to a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Skin rejuvenation: The red light emitted by the mask can penetrate deep into the skin, promoting cellular regeneration and improving overall skin tone and texture. It can help to reduce the appearance of age spots, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation.
Improved blood circulation: Red light therapy can enhance blood flow to the skin, which can result in a healthier complexion. It may help to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, promoting a more radiant and youthful appearance.
Reduced inflammation: Red light has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm irritated or inflamed skin. It may be beneficial for individuals with conditions such as acne, rosacea, or eczema.
Non-invasive and painless: Red light masks are non-invasive and generally painless to use. They provide a convenient at-home skincare option without needing to visit a salon.
What are the risks of using a red light face mask?
I personally was concerned with EMF exposure around my head while using a red light face mask. This is the entire reason I actually hadn’t purchased one up to this point in time.
Boncharge state on their website their product is low/no emf and I love the quality of all their products. But I did still do my own little test, mostly to satisfy my emf curiosity!
In this grid below, you’ll see the emf readings as per my testing. I use the Trifield emf tester (I got mine from Amazon). I’m showing the WEIGHTED EMF because this measures the frequencies that have an impact on our cellular health.
Use this information as a guide, to make educated choices about your own exposures. I’ve added the rating of my computer just to demonstrate a realistic comparison on what the exposure would mean for you.
Electrical EMF
Great news is that the electrical EMF from the face mask are negligible. Boncharge is an EMF-lowering company so I’d expect nothing less!
Weighted electric EMF - 3 V/m
Safe exposures - under 50 V/m
Magnetic EMF
There is some magnetic exposure, which is difficult to avoid completely when you’re running electricity through a product.
Weighted magnetic EMF - 68.2 mG
Compared to apple mac - 76.8 mG
So realistically, if you use your iPad on your lap, or carry your phone in your pocket, or put your phone next to your ear for phone calls (or dare I say, sleep with your phone charging next to your bed?).. and you’re ok with that? Then the exposure is LESS than that, PLUS the electrical and radiofrequency EMF added on top!!
Radiofrequency
Coming in at 0, who can argue with that!
Safety levels thought to be anywhere under 1 mW/m2
The Boncharge red light face mask
I found the whole process easy and enjoyable. I decided I was ok with the magnetic EMF exposure and began at 10min, 3x a week.
I LOVED that the QR code inside the box linked me to a PDF of setup instructions and troubleshooting. With that, it was so easy to charge and set up. The little remote it comes with is simple and straightforward to use.
It feels comfortable to have on your face!
I find the redness in my face is reducing and maybe my fine lines are less? I’m definitely gravitating towards wearing less makeup [not that I ever wore heaps] and I’m confident going completely makeup free regularly too. This was NEVER a thing before - as my base ‘tone’ is quite red (I’m sorry to beauty therapists if this isn’t the right description, ha!).
