What is Neuro Emotional Technique or NET?
Neuro Emotional Technique or NET for short is one of the techniques I use in my clinic.
It is an evidence based tool, used for resolving emotional stress and trauma that can become embodied presenting as:
1. physical ailments or
2. reactivity and dysregulation to stressors in our environment.
It aids to reduce our reactivity to emotional stressors in our environment, or basically helps us to self regulate, which in turn allows us to importantly role-model and facilitate self regulation for our little humans.
What we know is that when stressful or negative traumatic emotions and experiences occur either in childhood, or as adults, we all do the best we can with the resilience and skills we have at the time. We must have a degree of compassion and understanding for ourselves wherever we are at the moment, and also for our parents and care-givers, and our children.
You may have learnt about the autonomic nervous system ladder and figuring out where yours and your child/ren’s set points are, so this technique gives you information about expectations for responses/reactions to stressful stimuli and maybe understanding about past experiences as well.
We can see the emotions of negative traumatic experiences become embodied when :
1. We don’t have the resilience in our nervous system to safely process the event – think about your setpoint and where you are when events have happened.
2. We don’t have any safe people to role-model how to safely and effectively process the event or, who can hold space for our emotions while remaining regulated and not triggered themselves.
3. It is simply not safe to process it at the time or in the short period of time after with healthy and safe role-models,
Embodiment of emotions is when emotions, which are normally energy in motion, become stuck in the body. These experiences if not processed and released leave behind these physiological marks on the body, actually in the form of amino acid chains.
Mostly the expression of stuck emotions/experiences can show up as:
1. Physical pain - in many places, like knee pain, headaches, back pain, the list could go on physically.
2. Dysfunctional bio-chemical processing - someone may experience signs and symptoms associated with liver overload but nothing naturopathicaly helps to relieve it, then they may be storing emotions/trauma in their liver meridian
3. Other ways I can see this get played out is when people ‘get stuck’ repeating the same thing over and over in their life. Not always a scenario but it could be a repeat of the expression/belief of ‘I’m not good enough’, or ‘I am not deserving’.
It’s important to note that it is not our emotions that need to be ‘corrected’ but rather how they have anchored into our nervous system and the ongoing physiological responses that have been created from not processing them.
I love the quote by Najwa Zebian
‘These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb’.
The way I understand it is we have these experiences, and they do shape us, they do make us the people we are today, but when you carry them around unprocessed and still charged up anchoring your nervous system into survival, that’s not really you.
Think about how freeing, to be able to piece it all together, realise that what kept you safe in those past experiences but has become detrimental and dysfunctional, can be acknowledged and validated, and integrated through our system removing the charge.
You may be already consciously aware of your opportunity as a parent to work on your own nervous system and emotional wellbeing so you can role model and facilitate your children to have the best opportunity in life to live in joy, harmony and contentment.
